剧情：
北宋时，北狄王带兵进犯边关，兵部尚书李绶的长子李彦荣奉朝廷之命，带兵马前去抵抗。奸臣王强扣住军粮，使彦荣兵马被困，又乘机诬奏彦荣叛国投敌。朝廷偏听偏信，将李绶问成死罪押入监牢，将其全家查抄赶出汴梁。全家逃返苏州去投靠姻亲黄璋，没想到黄璋见李家遭了厄运，反目无情，硬要退婚。女儿桂英至死不依，发誓不与他人婚配。一天，彦贵卖水经过黄府花园，丫鬟芸香引他与小姐相会。二人互诉了真情，又约定当晚在柳荫下赠银。谁知此话被恶仆王良听见，向黄璋告发。为了达到退婚的卑鄙目的，黄璋命王良在彦贵取银时杀死芸香，栽赃于彦贵，又买通官府，将彦贵判成死罪。曾受过李绶搭救的贩马商人艾谦得知此事，立即骑着日行千里的火焰驹飞奔边关给彦荣送信。中秋节这一天，正当行刑时刻来到，彦贵性命难保之际，彦荣从边关赶回来了。冤情大白，朝廷赦免了李绶，李府全家团圆，彦贵，桂英也结成了美满夫妻。
